"A Robust Public Option Is Essential" - Progressive Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Grijalva Draws a Line in the Sand on Healthcare Reform: "We speak with Rep. Grijalva says of the public option. “It’s got to be part of [the bill]. If it’s not, we are just showering money upon money upon the same system and the same industry that got us into the mess we’re in right now.”"

Eight Years After 9/11, Ground Zero Volunteer Dying of Lung Disease is One of Many Still Fighting for Justice

Eight Years After 9/11, Ground Zero Volunteer Dying of Lung Disease is One of Many Still Fighting for Justice: "Today marks the eighth anniversary of 9/11, with vigils being held to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. We look at a group of victims that are often forgotten in the September 11 narrative: the thousands of rescue workers who became sick after being exposed to contaminants at Ground Zero. Hundreds have died. We speak to Joe Picurro, a New Jersey ironworker who worked as a volunteer on the pile for twenty-eight days. He is now dying of lung disease. We also speak with Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who is co-sponsoring the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, and Dr. Jacqueline Moline, director of the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine."

Please Cut the Crap!: "Dear Mr. President:

Have you noticed that every time you're absent from the scene for even a short time, like taking a week of vacation, the health insurance reform debate gets out of hand, and more than a little nuts? There's a very good reason for this, you know; it's because this country needs leadership. We haven't had that for a while, and we're in deep trouble right now because of that. But you know that; it's why you ran for president in the first place.

I know what you're trying to do with the public. You're trying to get people fired up to participate in the system, throwing out trial balloons designed to activate certain groups. Unfortunately, that doesn't work as well as you might think. If you want to find out what people want from you, ask them. If you want people to get behind you, then show leadership. If you show strong leadership on any issue, the people will get behind you and tell you how they want you to proceed.

We speak with Hilda Sarkisyan, the mother of Nataline Sarkisyan, who died two years ago at the age of seventeen after the insurance giant CIGNA denied her claim for a liver transplant. “We need a better change in this country, and I’m willing to help the President to do that…I want to meet him. I want him to feel how it feels not to have a daughter. He has two girls; he should know,” says Hilda Sarkisyan. “If we don’t stop this now, every family is going to have my story in their family.”

“American Values” — A Smoke Screen in the Debate on Health Care Reform | Health Care Reform 2009

“American Values” — A Smoke Screen in the Debate on Health Care Reform | Health Care Reform 2009 author Allan S. Brett, M.D.

"Amid all the rhetoric about health care reform, one claim has emerged as a trump card designed to preserve the current patchwork of private and public insurance and to stop discussion of a government-sponsored single-payer system in its tracks: the claim that single-payer health care — a Canadian-style Medicare-for-all system — is antithetical to “American values.” The idea that American values dictate a particular approach to health care reform is often stated explicitly, and it is implicit in the generalization that “Americans want” a particular system. The underlying premise is that an identifiable set of American values point incontrovertibly to a health care system anchored by the private insurance industry. Remarkably, this premise has received very little scrutiny."

I've included the prices from my local supermarket in Portland, Oregon. Actual prices can vary quite a bit based on geography and growing season.

Propaganda And Prejudice Distort The Health Reform Debate | Physicians for a National Health Program

Propaganda And Prejudice Distort The Health Reform Debate | Physicians for a National Health Program Medicare-for-all would save hundreds of billions every year. Private insurers expend enormous sums for insurer commissions, advertising, Wall-Street-scale executive compensation, and profits. In contrast, Medicare spends little or nothing on these unnecessary, unproductive activities. Health care providers and private plans struggle with thousands of different billing schedules. As the New York Times reported: "The average provider -- doctors or hospitals -- has between 5 and 100 reimbursement rates for the same procedure. . . . A hospital chain may have 150 rates for the same procedure."

U.S. trails rest of world in health care | Physicians for a National Health Program

U.S. trails rest of world in health care | Physicians for a National Health Program Let me begin by stating that I believe that neither the Canadian nor the U.S. health-care system is perfect, and both could be improved. Some Canadians in need of elective procedures are said to have to wait to see a specialist for their medical conditions in Canada. I, personally, had an appointment last week with a specialist here whom I had been waiting 16 weeks to see, because he is one of a small group of providers “approved” by my insurance. Waits can occur on either side of the border.

But my wait had an end to it. Some 48 million people will have no end to medical problems they are experiencing. Imagine having a migraine that had no end to it or a painful urological condition that continued indefinitely. Imagine if you had a suspicious mole and no way to know if it was cancer or not. That is the state of 48 million Americans, through no fault of their own.

Truthdig - Reports - It’s Time to Put the Clamps on Tobacco "There is an obvious and overdue way to improve Americans’ health care without raising taxes, curtailing insurance coverage for those who already have it, burdening employers with higher costs or jeopardizing the two big government health insurance programs for the elderly and the poor."

Truthdig - Reports - Put Single-Payer on the Table

Truthdig - Reports - Put Single-Payer on the Table "President Barack Obama promises health-care reform, but he has taken single-payer health care off the table. Single-payer is the system that removes private insurance companies from the picture; the government pays all the bills, but health-care delivery remains private. People still get their choice of what doctor to go to and what hospital to use. Single-payer reduces the administrative costs and removes the profit that insurance companies add to health-care delivery. Single-payer solutions, however, get almost no space in the debate."

Steven Hill: What Obama Can Learn from "Old Europe" "The World Health Organization (WHO) rates European countries as having the best health care systems in the world, spending, on average, far less than the United States for universal coverage and quality results. France has the top-rated health care system, while the United States is ranked 37th -- just ahead of Cuba and Slovenia. In the Czech Republic, a proposal to introduce a $2 co-payment per office visit nearly toppled the government, as health care is considered a basic right in the social contract."

AUSTINTOWN — Ed Port’s facial deformity has limited his ability to secure a job, hampered him socially and affected his hearing and sight.
Port was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2, which causes a growing tumor in his face, when he was 3 or 4.
“Between the ages of 7 and 19, I had 18 to 21 surgeries,” Port, 38, said.
Growth of the tumor has obscured his vision in his left eye, damaged his hearing and led to the removal of part of his jawbone. His health insurance considers the series of surgeries required to correct the problem cosmetic, however, and won’t cover them, Port said.

Many TV Stations Switching Despite Digital Delay : NPR "Despite a law delaying the switch to digital television until June, hundreds of TV stations are planning to turn off their analog signals on Tuesday, potentially leaving millions of unprepared viewers in the dark.
On Wednesday, President Obama signed a bill to delay the nationwide switch from analog to digital television to June 12. The long-planned switch was scheduled for Feb. 17, but a federal program to help subsidize the cost of digital-converter boxes with coupons ran out of money, leaving little time for consumers to get ready for the changeover." The final flight, scheduled for 2010, will demonstrate Dragon’s ability to berth with the Space Station."
"Immediately thereafter, SpaceX will begin conducting the first of 12 operational cargo flights to the Space Station, awarded under the Cargo Resupply Services contract a few months ago. The CRS contract has a minimum value of $1.6B and a maximum value of $3.1B and, as stated by NASA, its success is vital to the future of the Space Station."

2008 National Environmental Scorecard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – For 30 years, the non-partisan LCV Scorecard has been the nationally accepted yardstick used to gauge how members of Congress voted on key energy and environmental issues. The majority of the 11 Senate and 13 House votes in the 2008 Scorecard are energy votes that presented Congress with a real choice: chart a bold new course that puts Americans back to work, saves families money at the gas pump and on home heating bills, improves our national security, and protects the planet for future generations; or, continue the disastrous energy policies of the last eight years that have benefited only the oil industry. This Scorecard separates those members of Congress who are embracing a new energy future from those who are wedded to the past. 2008 National Environmental Scorecard

The Great Warming - Home

The Great Warming - Home: "We are living at the dawn of a new epoch. Year by year, degree by degree, Earth is growing warmer... a legacy of the Industrial Revolution, population growth, and our addiction to technology, speed and power.

Just as other generations spoke of a Great Plague and a Great Depression, our children will be compelled to endure The Great Warming - and find a way to conquer its consequences.

Filmed in eight countries on four continents, endorsed by dozens of the world's leading scientists, this is the most factually accurate, visually stunning and wide-ranging production ever mounted about this complex, fascinating subject."

The Riff: Poll: Do You Miss Bush Lingo Yet? Vote for your favorite Bush lingo quote: "This is historic times. (Washington DC, 2003) I think it's very important for the American President to mean what he says. That's why I understand that the enemy could misread what I say. That's why I try to be as clearly I can. (Washington DC, 2008) I don't particularly like it when people put words in my mouth, either, by the way, unless I say it. (Texas, 2007) I'm the master of low expectations. (Air Force One, 2003) It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it. (Reuters, 2000) We ought to make the pie higher. (South Carolina, 2000) You're working hard to put food on your family. (New Hampshire, 2000) Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream. (Wisconsin, 2000) Rarely is the question asked, are, is our children learning? (South Carolina, 2000) You teach a child to read and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test. (Tennessee, 2001) Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country. (Missouri, 2004) I was like a pit bull on the pant leg of opportunity. (New York Times, 2000) I want to share with you an interesting program – for two reasons, one, it's interesting, and two, my wife thought of it – or has actually been involved with it; she didn't think of it. But she thought of it for this speech. (Washington DC, 2008) The Senator has got to understand that he can't have it both ways. He can't take the high horse and then claim the low road. (South Carolina, 2000) The folks who conducted to act on our country on September 11th made a big mistake.… They misunderestimated the fact that we love a neighbor in need. They misunderestimated the compassion of our country. I think they misunderestimated the will and determination of the Commander-in-Chief, too. (Virginia, 2001) I'm the decider, and I decide what is best. (Washington DC, 2006) We need an energy bill that encourages consumption. (New Jersey, 2002) You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror. (CNN, 2006) When you're marching to war, it's not a very optimistic thought, is it? In other words, it's the opposite of optimistic when you're thinking you're going to war. (Missouri, 2004) It's in our country's interests to find those who would do harm to us and get them out of harm's way. (White House, 2005) I'm telling you there's an enemy that would like to attack America, Americans, again. There just is. That's the reality of the world. And I wish him all the very best. (Washington DC, 2009) Oftentimes I'm asked, why? Why do you care what happens outside of America? (Washington DC, 2008) The German asparagus are fabulous. (Germany, 2008) We spent a lot of time talking about Africa, as we should. Africa is a nation that suffers from incredible disease. (Sweden, 2001) First, let me make it very clear, poor people aren't necessarily killers. Just because you happen to be not rich doesn't mean you're willing to kill. (White House, 2003) We're making the right decisions to bring the solution to an end. (Washington DC, 2001) I am determined to keep the process on the road to peace. (White House, 2003) One of the great things about America, one of the beauties of our country, is that when we see a young, innocent child blown up by an IED, we cry. (Washington DC, 2006) Thank you, Your Holiness. Awesome speech. (White House, 2008) I've been in the Bible every day since I've been the President (Washington DC, 2008) I'll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office. (Washington DC, 2008) I think we agree, the past is over. (Campaign airplane, 2000) Bonus: There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again. (Tennessee, 2002)"

Course: The Da Vinci Code - Separating Fact From Fiction

Welcome to the online course, The Da Vinci Code—Separating Fact From Fiction. Dan Brown’s novel, The Da Vinci Code, has been on the New York Times Bestseller List since its release and is one of the most widely read books of our time. This novel, however, is more than a page-turning murder mystery. The Da Vinci Code is a conspiracy theory that leaves many readers wondering whether everything they have believed about Christ and the Bible is wrong. It is our desire that this study will strengthen your confidence in God’s Word as you explore biblical answers to questions raised by The Da Vinci Code.

Blog for Change

Blog for Change This week the world witnessed an amazing moment: As Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States in front of almost two million Americans and over a billion viewers around the globe, one could sense the emergence of a new era in America – one of change, hope, and responsibility.

President Obama’s inaugural message was a clarion call to service and action. “What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility,” he said. “A recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.”

The president’s message echoed the long-standing American values of hard work, sacrifice, and service. He stated without equivocation that by coming together, rolling up our sleeves, and working our tails off, we can do more than get ourselves out of the rut we’re in; we can make lasting change to benefit generations to come.

We couldn’t agree more, and in the next few months we will be answering this call to service by providing additional ways for the Change.org community to get directly involved in the work of ...

Gilda's Club Worldwide Spells 'HOPE' To Colon Cancer Patients And Survivors

Gilda's Club Worldwide Spells 'HOPE' To Colon Cancer Patients And Survivors Gilda's Club Worldwide offers a message of hope this holiday season to the millions touched by colon cancer with a one-of-a-kind mosaic mural at its New York City headquarters. The 15X6 foot mural was created by more than 165 colon cancer survivors from around the nation as part of a new MOSAIC of Colon Cancer Survivorship program celebrating the strides that have improved colon cancer treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, death rates for colon cancer have been declining due to many factors including prevention, improved detection and better treatment options.

The mural spells "HOPE!" in celebration of the advances in prevention, screening, staging and treatment that are improving survival for people with colon cancer.

For several months, Gilda's Clubhouses from across the country have worked with colon cancer survivors and their loved ones to create inspirational murals expressing the thoughts and feelings of people nationwide touched by colon cancer. Murals were contributed by clubhouses in every region of the country - Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest and West - before heading to New York City. The MOSAIC mural of HOPE! was assembled by volunteers at Gilda's Club Worldwide where it will be on display January 12 until February 13, 2009.

"Colon cancer is a frightening diagnosis, but there is hope," said Sandy Towers, Gilda's Club Worldwide interim executive director. "Through the MOSAIC of Colon Cancer Survivorship program, survivors offered the best kind of hope that comes from those who have already gone through the experience."

Cancer ‎(Human Evolution 2008‎) Note: "This is a very comprehensive compilation of information based on solid research into the history of Cancer, the Big Pharma money machine that proliferates the mythology and advancement of this global epidemic. As a hope for avoiding cancer, the author of this article offers a thorough how-to avoid health and immune system deterioration through nutrition and energy awareness.

This is an article worth reading for anyone who needs to be disabused of the belief that the orthodox cancer treatments with toxic chemo-"therapy" actually work. Since when is the destruction of one's immune system with toxic chemo and radiation therapeutic? Something to ponder while reading the article."

IAVA verses KBR

IAVA In April of 2003, members of the Indiana National Guard were protecting KBR employees at a power plant in Southern Iraq. After their service, some of these troops exhibited signs of cancer, tumors and rashes, and new reports indicate that these injuries may be the result of exposure to toxins present at the site.

Incredibly, CBS News has uncovered evidence that KBR may have known about the risks months before it took any action to inform those soldiers.

Please take a minute to join over 5,000 other people who have already signed the petition, and tell KBR to come clean.
